With special reference to the relief representing the Descent from the Cross (12th? cent.) hewn out of one of the rocks--known as "Externsteine" near Horn in the principality of Lippe--in the vicinity of a cave-like shrine (originally devoted to the Mithrascult?) consecrated in 1115 as a Christian chapel.
The frontispiece is a reproductin of the relief.
