Gordon Jesse Walker was the last of the mule skinners on the Rogue River National Forest in Southern Oregon. He writes of his adventures packing supplies and equipment to forest look-out towers, fire fighters and general maintenance during his tenure at Butte Falls Ranger Station. While Walker served many more than six years as a mule skinner, the six years referenced in the title of the book refer to the years he spent with his boss at Butte Falls, Doug Finch. An enjoyable read, full of details into a way of life overtaken by helicopters and computers.
