Edition Notes
Holograph.
Plates by G. Cumberland and William Blake.
"Apparently the MS once consisted of at least 102 more leaves paginated 1-197, 210-215 presumably with the text of the Outlines from the antients which was later sent to the printer and then abandoned. The prints to sketches removed from p. 198-226 may have been either alternative designs for the Appendix or those for the text proper."--Bentley, G.E. Bibliography of George Cumberland.
Leaf 13, paginated as p. 50 on verso, is evidently from an earlier part of the larger book, now pasted to the verso of leaf 12 (p. 227).
On the verso of the leaf inserted after p. 227 is: "These are the original outlines which I made when in Rome and from which Mr Lewis engraved them for my work on the Outlines of the ancients G. Cumberland."
The prints on l. 232-243 bear printed numbers 4-6, 10-11, 17, 24, 13-15, 23, 19; their MS numbers in old brown ink are 1-12. The Appendix is keyed to the ink numbers on the prints.
Pages 198-209 and 216-227 are blank except for numbers in brown ink.
Paper watermarked: SLADE 1820 with crowned medallion with rampant, bearded lion (p. 198-231); HALL 1817 (final two blank leaves); leaves of plates are unwatermarked.
Two tracings on unwatermarked paper of the etching numbered 11 (leaf 236) and of a design not found here are loosely inserted in the manuscript.
