Este libro se publicó dos meses antes de las elecciones presidenciales de diciembre de 1989 en Chile. El general Augusto Pinochet había sido derrotado un año antes en un plebiscito que rechazó la extensión de su mandato. Ese plebiscito y la elección que se aproximaba eran herramientas del itinerario político que el mismo Pinochet dispuso en la Constitución de 1980, aceptada por mayoría ciudadana. El candidato presidencial de oposición al gobierno militar era Patricio Aylwin Azocar. Éste como presidente del Partido Demócrata Cristiano había sido un fuerte opositor al presidente Salvador Allende. Cuando los militares tomaron el poder del país en 1973 mantuvo un bajo perfil como opositor a éstos. El libro hace un recuento de los hechos históricos que derivaron en un gobierno marxista y cómo los democratacristianos lo hicieron posible. Revela también, apoyado en sólida documentación, el nivel en que Estados Unidos y la Iglesia Católica se involucraron en la política chilena para que el futuro presidente, como sucedió, fuera Aylwin, y de qué manera el Partido Comunista con el apoyo de la Unión Soviética y Cuba, paralelamente, impulsaron una sublevación armada que, finalmente, derivó en un apoyo político táctico a Aylwin.
