This book was published two months before presidential elections in December 1989. Gen. Augusto Pinochet was defeated a year earlier in a referendum that rejected the extension of its mandate. That referendum and the election was approaching political itinerary tools Pinochet himself forth in the 1980 Constitution, accepted by most citizens. The opposition presidential candidate's military government was Patricio Aylwin Azocar. This as president of the Christian Democrats had been a strong opponent of President Salvador Allende when the military seized power in the country in 1973 and kept a low profile as opposition to the military. The book recounts the historical events that led to a Marxist government and how the Democrats made it possible. It also reveals how the United States and the Catholic Church were directly involved in Chilean politics for the future president, as it happened, was Aylwin, and how the Communist Party supported the Soviet Union and Cuba, in parallel, led an armed uprising that ultimately led to a tactical political support Aylwin. The extensive research and documents produced left no doubt of the external forces that acted in this delicate period of Chilean politics.
