"IT IS ONE of the paradoxes of the whole story with which we have to deal that the most sensational step leading to the scientific revolution in astronomy was taken long before the discovery of the telescope-even long before the Danish astronomer, Tycho Brahe, in the latter part of the sixteenth century, had shown the great improvement that it was still possible to achieve in observations made with the naked eye."
