Edition Notes

Constitutes the seventh part of Theodor de Bry's Small voyages, printed in 13 parts and an Appendix in Frankfurt am Main and Oppenheim from 1597 to 1633.

This work cannot be identified as either the first, second, or third issues of the sole Latin edition of part seven of the Small voyages by Church.

This part contains: (1) an account of a voyage made under the command of Joris van Spilbergen to Ceylon in 1601-1604. It was first published at Delft in 1601; was translated in German, for the German edition of the Small voyages by Gotthardt Artus; and again into Latin for the present work. Camus shows that these translations are much abridged and mutilated. (2) The relation of Gasparo Balbi, a Venetian, to the kingdom of Pegu [modern day Burma, or Myanmar], via Syria, in 1579-1588. Third translation was made from the Italian edition, published at Venice under the title Viaggio dell' Indie Orientale, de Gasparo Balbi. Cf. Church.

Translation of: t'Historiael journael, van tghene ghepasseert is van weghen drie schepen, ghenaemt den Ram, Schaep ende het Lam, ghevaren uyt Zeelandt vander stadt Camp-Vere naer d'Oost-Indien, onder t'beleyt van Ioris van Speilberghen, generael, anno 1601. den 5. Mey, tot in t'eylant Celon, vervatende veel schoone gheschiedenissen, die by haer op dese reyse gheschiedt zijn, inden tijde van twee jaer, elff maenden, neghenthien daghen / by Joris van Spilbergen, first printed in Delft, 1601.

There are three issues of the sole Latin edition of part 7. The first issue has the coat of arms of Archbishop Schwichardt at the head of the dedication on p. [3], 1st count. The second issue has the coat of arms of Johann Adam, Archbishop of Mayence, printed at the head of the dedication on p. [3], 1st count. The third edition contains an engraving of the great ruby at the head of the dedication on p. [3], 1st count.

"Icones, hoc est: Verae variorvm popvlorvm et regvm, ceremoniarvm item, svperstitiosorvm ritvvm et rervm aliarvm, hoc tomo septimo commemoratarum, effigies & imagines. qvibvs tam Georgii Spilbergii, quam Caspari Balbii nauigationes illustrantur. [3-4], 5th count, has separate title with imprint: Francoforti, in officina typographica Wolgangi Richteri. M. DC. VI. [1606]

Errors in paging: p. 50 and 59 misnumbered 54 and 69 respectively.

Contains 22 leaves of plates which are numbered I-XXII, printed on recto (except for VIII and IX which are double plates and have the first recto printed with descriptive text) and which are signed a2-b4, c1-2, d1-2, e1-g4, and chi1.
