Edition Notes

According to the heading of the dedicatory poem at the beginning of the second part, "To the readers of my former peece", the two parts are by the same author. Therefore, Mercurius Pragmaticus = Mercurius Melancholicus, whose name appears on title page of part 1.

Sometimes ascribed to John Taylor and to Marchamont Nedham, who used the pseudonym Mercurius Pragmaticus. Cf. Frank, J. Cromwell's press agent : a critical biography of Marchamont Nedham, 1980, p. 68; The Revels history of drama in England, 1981, v. 4, p. 286-7.
