Edition Notes

Holograph, signed with initials.

The bottom of page three of this manuscript, including the signature, was cut off. The postscript on page four was sign with initials.

The Eastern N.Y. Society held its annual meeting last week in Albany; it was "a perfect farce." The Patriot is to be discontinued in a few weeks or days. The Liberty Press will be the only anti-slavery newspaper left. Abby Kelley Foster urges Maria Weston Chapman to take the editorship of the National Anti-Slavery Standard, otherwise David Lee Child must take it. "Heavan avert such a catastrophe." She considers Mrs. Lydia M. Child "far better qualified notwithstanding her 'hatred of the work of reform." David L. Child's letter in the New Hampshire Gazette is "a plain invitation to support the Whig party..." Joseph C. Hathaway wrote to Abby Kelley Foster that Maria W. Chapman's "capabilities should be preferred to any other." David L. Child "has somehow a killing influence on everything he touches." The Childs leave the city for Northampton this afternoon. If Maria Weston Chapman takes charge of the Standard "for a little time," someone may be found to relieve her. "But now just at this crisis who can be found?"
