Correspondence, memoranda, diaries, journals, writings, speeches, subject files, newspaper diaries, biographical material, family papers, financial records, photographs, and other papers relating chiefly to foreign affairs with emphasis on American-Soviet relations. The papers document Davies's career as chairman of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (1915-1916), U.S. ambassador to the Soviet Union (1936-1938) and to Belgium and Luxembourg (1938-1939), as special presidential envoy for Franklin D. Roosevelt to confer with Joseph Stalin (1943) and for Harry S. Truman to confer with Sir Winston Churchill (1945), as special adviser to Truman and U.S. secretary of state James F. Byrnes at the Potsdam Conference (1945 ), and as vice chairman of the U.S. President's Advisory Commission on Military Training (1946-1947). Subjects include Belgium, economic relations, presidential and senatorial election campaigns, post-World War II conditions, universal military training, and Davies's yacht Sea Cloud. Includes manuscripts of two unpublished books titled In the Days of Their Power and Glory and Missions for Peace.
