Baudelaire n'avait pas traduit tous les contes d'Edgar Poe. Ces textes «négligés» ont été ici réunis, dans l'ordre chronologique de leur publication. Ces nouvelles, quasiment inconnues du public français, relèvent non seulement du fantastique, mais encore de ce que Poe appelait le «grotesque», et aussi de la parodie et de l'autoparodie. Dans sa préface, Alain Jaubert fait le point sur toute une imagerie romantico-psychanalytique qui a travesti l'œuvre d'un des plus grands écrivains américains et donne diverses clés pour de nouvelles lectures de Poe.
