Jerome Handler, in his Guide to source material for the study of Barbados history, points out that authorities going back to 1808 [i.e. John Poyer] attribute this work to H. Frere or Henry Frere, who was a member of the council and its president from 1790-1793. The name of George Frere apparently first appeared in 1909 in Frank Cundall's Bibliography of the West Indies. Schomburgk, Hist. of Barbados, p. vii, refers to the author simply by his surname, remarking that he seems merely to have copied from Oldmixon and the "Memoirs of the first settlement of the island of Barbados," 1743
