Christian and Naomi knew each other as children, but then their paths separated. Christian is poor and never able to develop his musical talent. Naomi is the daughter of a Jewish family that moves in the highest social circles. Their paths cross a last time as Naomi's vehicle is stopped so the bier carrying Christian's body may pass. In the final accounting, Naomi's life is filled with ennui while Christian's talent remained unexpressed. The story asks if a person really can shape his destiny
