Subject: There is no consensus on the meaning of meaning
Subject: There is no consensus on the meaning of meaning
This is one of those books that you can safely re-read every few years and get a lot more out of it each time. The main body of the book consists of ten chapters, each dedicated to the problem of meaning in various corners of their interests, in the theory of interpretation, word-magic, semiotics, psychology, symbolism, the theory of definition, aesthetics, philosophy, pragmatism, and the context theory of reference. It also includes various appendixes and supplements, by an anthropologist (Malinowski) and a physician (Crookshank). One of the best things about this book is that almost every reference they make is available on this site. Now if only the Internet Archive had a user-generated method of linking footnotes in books with the very pages they refer to, that would be great - it could become a hyperlinked library. Read this book, it's very good.
