G. S. Hargrave, a native of Indiana, attended public schools there until 1966, when his family relocated to the West Indies. He completed his secondary education at St. John's Episcopal Cathedral School, Santurce, Puerto Rico in 1968, and enlisted in the Army midway through the following year. He spent all of 1970 with the 459th Signal Battalion in the Khanh Hoa Province of the former Republic of South Vietnam. After his discharge in 1972 he attended Indiana University, majoring in Fine Arts and Literature. He graduated with a BA from Indiana University, Bloomington, in 1976.
The author's earliest published fiction, all in the mystery genre, appeared in the United States, Germany, and Japan through the 1980s. In recent years he has turned his attention to science fiction and fantasy.
The author presently lives and works in northwest Indiana. He's also a painter and an improvisational guitarist.
